The video first-
Ballistic-X is an eight dollar app that has become a range tool that I really enjoy using. Its interface is very well put together and really only has essential functions and options. It is not busy and overloaded with options that really don’t benefit the user in any way and just clutter up the app.
I am using the app exclusively for load development and data collection, and for me, that’s where it shines. The app allows the user to set up their own options for documentation, choose your unit of measurement (MOA/MIL, Imperial/Metric) and export the info for future reference or load development. Rather than trying to remember what loads I have already tried and dismissed, I have a full record so I don’t duplicate my work with easy to access to the information on my device where ever I am. Below is an example of what you get when you export.
I did find one issue that keeps popping up. When you drop the selection cursor onto the point you’re trying to designate, the cursor will move off the selected point, no matter how many times you try and drop it in the right spot. The fix I found for this is to zoom in on the image a bit more and then it will allow you to select the data point on your target. This has happened on both my phone and tablet, not the end of the world but it is annoying.
The workflow and data entry is as follows:
- Take a picture of the target you are using.
- Identify the 1 inch reference points on the image
- Input distance from Target
- Mark Point Of Aim on the target
- Identify your impacts on the target using the “crosshairs”
- Then add the overlay to the target
- You can select the “LABEL” tab at this point and update any information you want. So if you want to put wind, humidity, temp or load info, this is where to do it.
- Export the image – I name it by rifle then load so it’s easy to reference later when I am trying to find history and compare loads.
I have so far been very impressed with this app. Other than the glitch I get occasionally where it’s hard to put the cursor exactly where you want it because the image moves this app has done everything I wanted it to. I was looking for an easy way to catalog and reference load data and Ballistic – X has fit the bill. The export feature and label feature both make it super easy to organize and share data.
If you’re looking for a good, easy to use app for reloading reference – this is the one. I highly recommend Ballistic-X as a great addition to your load building and reloading program.
